The Finest Looking Private Driveway Bridge In The State Of Indiana
Just 1/4 mile south of Olean, Indiana is East County Road 650 South which is a deadend road. However it wasn’t always a deadend. Before 1947 this section of roadway sat on what was known as the Versailles and Vevay Road which ran north and south between the towns of Versailles in Ripley County and Vevay in southern Switzerland County along the Ohio River.
In 1947 the road was realigned and bypassed turning it into the present day deadend. However, before the realignment, this small section of roadway featured two one lane stone arch bridges built sometime between 1890 and 1910. When the new highway was built, the larger stone arch bridge spanning Raccoon Creek was demolished. The smaller stone arch bridge spanning a tributary of Raccoon Creek was allowed to remain.
Apparently from 1947 until this log home was built in 1988 the bridge saw little if any traffic but now graces the entrance to this property owners driveway. Aside from adding value to the property, this has to be one of the most beautiful private driveway bridges in the state!
On a side note, East County Road 650 South now only goes back to a former Conservation Club building but originally it continued east for over 2 miles fording Raccoon Creek 10 times before intersecting with the present day East Olean Road.
