The Abandoned Stone Arch Railroad Culvert, Guilford, Indiana
This beautiful stone culvert is said to have been built in 1864 when a rail line was built down here through Bonnell and Guilford, Indiana. Apparently there were several different lines built in this area with each new line taking a different route. Sitting back on private property near the intersection of Bonnell & Collier Ridge Road, this is thought to be one of the only railroad stone arch culverts of its kind in the State of Indiana.
Measuring about 30 feet across and 30 feet wide, the culvert is starting to show its age with areas of the upper portion beginning to give way and dropping to the ground below.
The rail line that supported this particular track ran west and crossed the West Fork of Tanners Creek on a bridge which is now long gone. The tracks that ran east from this point also crossed a section of the West Fork of Tanners Creek by way of a trestle where the stone abutments are still standing.
This historic culvert will eventually collapse and disappear into the surrounding landscape but for now we can enjoy viewing the skilled craftsmanship it took to build this piece of railroad history.
