The Abandoned Fields Road Phantom Bridge, Sadieville, Kentucky

Built in 1917 this abandoned girder bridge over a section of the Norfolk Southern Railway is about 92 feet long. The bridge, owned by Norfolk Southern, was closed in November 2018 after the Kentucky Department of Transportation did an inspection and deemed the bridge was not safe to drive on. When I shot this video in September of 2021 the pavement was deteriorating to a point where you could see the wood decking underneath. In addition, just standing off to the side I was able to view sever rust between the girder and the endplates resting on top of the original stone bridge abutments. Most of these older girder bridges have been replaced with a concrete span so I’m guessing this neat old bridge may eventually be replaced as well.
