Bower Bridge, Mahaffey, Pennsylvania
The Bower Bridge located near MaHaffey, Pennsylvania in Clearfield County was built around 1910 over the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. This bridge is actually 2 bridges in one. The original steel through truss portion was built in 1910 which features 9 panels. In 1988 the bridge was reinforced with the steel arches which actually bypass the original bridge. The curved steel arches still use the original deck but retain the original 1910 superstructure.
I’ve seen several bridges like this in Pennsylvania. It’s a very unique look that some people don’t like but I think it’s pretty cool looking. Plus it still preserves the original structure, which is great!
I couldn’t find anyone who knew why it was named Bower Bridge as it’s not related to the stream it crosses or the road it is located on. Maybe it was named for a local land owner??? If you know, please leave a comment below.
