2nd Oldest Bridge in Franklin County, Indiana

Built in 1885 the Harvey Branch Road Stone Arch Bridge is the 2nd oldest bridge in Franklin County, Indiana. It predates the Stockheughter Covered Bridge by 2 years and the Snow Hill Covered Bridge by 9 years.

This one lane, two span bridge is 40 feet long and only 12 feet wide which makes for a tight squeeze when it comes to larger vehicles.

The bridge spans Harvey Branch which flows into Salt Creek.

There are several dozen stone arch bridges in southern Indiana although this is one of only two stone arch bridges in Franklin County still open to traffic. Several more have been bypassed and are hidden back in the woods slowly falling apart. I have a few videos on these abandoned bridges coming out soon.

Most of Indiana’s stone arch bridges were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. By 1920 concrete became the material of choice when building new bridges which phased out the stone bridges pretty quickly.
