The Mystery of the Georgetown, Kentucky Driveway Bridge
Located just a mile north of downtown Georgetown, Kentucky is a historic steel pony truss bridge spanning Dry Run Creek. The bridge sits on private property and carries a driveway which leads back to a 26 acre estate. Built in 1892 by the Pittsburgh Bridge Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the 5 panel pin-connected Pratt pony truss bridge is about about 40 feet long. On the far side of the bridge, away from the roadway is a cattle guard on the floor of the bridge. The mystery behind this bridge is that no one seems to know where it originally came from. I’m guessing this may have originally been a county highway bridge that was brought to this location during a standard bridge replacement however, whoever built the 1800s mansion could have possibly paid to have the bridge specifically built for their driveway. Who knows??? If you have an idea where it came from, let me know.
