The Abandoned Butler Bridge, Stockdale, Indiana
The Abandoned Butler Bridge, Stockdale, Indiana
Built in 1903 by the Pan American Bridge Company of New Castle, Indiana, the Butler Bridge is 286 feet long and spans the Eel River near Stockdale, Indiana. This two span steel through truss bridge is reported to be the oldest bridge still standing that was built by Pan American.
The bridge stands out amongst other bridges in that era due to it’s ornate portals. Closed in 2015 due to serious issues with the superstructure, this bridge would make for an excellent “mini-Park” due to its scenic location over the beautiful Eel River.
Pack a lunch and take a road trip to one of the finest spots in northern Indiana.
