Old Highway 53 Phantom Bridge, Oldham, Kentucky
The Old Highway 53 Phantom Bridge is one of those spans that will slip away into history without much notice due to it’s size and location.
This bridge was probably built in the 1920s or early 1930s and was bypassed in 1961 when Highway 53 was realigned and placed about 100 feet to the northeast.
This pin connected pony truss bridge was built by the Champion Bridge Company of Wilmington, Ohio. It’s 30 feet long and spans Ash Run. Before this bridge was built, there may not have been a bridge at this location and people probably just forded the small stream. Today the Old Highway 53 Phantom bridge is no longer in use as the decking is completely gone. Only 2 houses sit on this stretch of road so it’s highly unlikely the county will ever repair or replace this beast.
A nice place to visit if your in the area. Hurry though, because it probably won’t last much longer.
