State Route 52 Ghost Road and Phantom Bridge # 2, Cedar Grove, Indiana
Traveling west on U.S. Route 52 just a half of a mile east of Cedar Grove, Indiana the road takes a gentle turn to the right but looking straight ahead, you’ll notice a gravel driveway. Apparently that gravel driveway is the original road that led into Cedar Grove before U.S. Route 52 was constructed around 1934. Looking over plat maps dating back to 1867, I found the original road went straight before doing a soft zig zag into Cedar Grove proper. Along this section of abandoned roadway is a small one lane concrete phantom bridge about 12 feet long and spanning what appears to be more of a ditch than a creek. The bridge was most likely built around 1910 and from what I can tell hasn’t seen any real automobile traffic since the 1930s outside of a tractor or two.
In the winter months the bridge is easily viewed from State Route 52. For a small town, Cedar Grove has quite a few historic bridges past and present with this one destined to be around for a couple hundred years if not disturbed by man.
