The Volk Ford Bridge, Enochsburg, Indiana
Straddling the border of Decatur & Franklin Counties in southeastern Indiana is the Volk Ford stone arch bridge built in 1895. The 3 span, one lane bridge is about 90 feet long and carries traffic over Salt Creek.
Back around 2007 the bridge was closed for a while due to some serious structural problems. Since that time a series of make shift threaded rods and metal channels have been fashioned to the bridge apparently as a way to stabilize the stonework.
South central Indiana is famous for its stone arch bridges that were built generally between 1890 and 1920. This is one of 28 stone arch bridges still standing in Decatur County with at least 5 stone arch bridges here in the county demolished and replaced in the last 50 years.
