The Abandoned Campbell’s Tunnel, Radcliff, Ohio
Construction of the tunnel began in March 1877 by the Columbus & Gallipolis Railway. Unfortunately the rail company ran out of money in 1878 and construction was halted. The line was then sold to the Ohio & West Virginia Railway who completed the tunnel in October of 1880. A year later in 1881 the line was sold to the Columbus, Hocking Valley & Toledo Railway which merged into the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad in 1930.
The tunnel was in use up until June 7, 1979 and was totally abandoned by 1982. The tunnel was cut through a sandstone hillside and is 896 feet long. The sandstone markings inside the tunnel are a work of art. On the day we visited the site, quite a few of the locals could be found driving their trucks in and out of this massive tunnel which is considerably cooler than the outside summer heat.
